Life In Different Ports

Being a flight attendant means being away from home, and having constant changes of locations. When the flight is finished, the layover begins and crew settle into one their many second homes. They might be exploring the city with other crew, or just enjoying the hotel. Living it up in different cities around the world is one of the greatest perks of being a flight attendant, and this is what it’s like being constantly on the go and what crew get up to on their layovers.

What Happens When Crew Get Sick Away From Home Base?

“She was talking about how she didn’t have enough spending money for her holiday and then she went sick upline. Let’s just say I bet that extra allowance came in handy.”

With busy schedules, jet lag, fatigue, and the airline cabin resembling what is essentially a giant petri dish of germs, it’s no wonder that flight attendants can get run down more than others. Most of the time, flighties know they are getting sick before they sign on for their duty, and ‘pull the pin’ before they start their trip. However, it’s not uncommon for a crewmember to fall sick half way through a trip, which logistically can have a few impacts on their fellow crew and also the crew member themselves.

What Are The Favourite Destinations For Cabin Crew?

“Give me America trips any day. I just can’t be doing Asias all the time”

Think of a flight attendant and chances are you think of the exotic locations where they spend their layovers. It’s true that for many flighties, a big part of the time they spend at work is not actually at work at all, but in a different city before their next flight.

There’s a lot more that makes a certain port popular for flight attendants than just the city itself. That said, not all destinations are created equal.

Why Being A Flight Attendant Is The Best Job I’ve Ever Had

“Did you hear that Donna quit? She’s gonna miss it when she realises what she’s left behind!”

I started flying a little bit later in life than many others. It wasn’t something I planned on doing, and I had never previously seen myself as a flightie. I was at a crossroads in my life and my career, and flying came at just the right time. Like a gift from the heavens, my friend encouraged me to go for it. I’d never worked or applied to be cabin crew before, but the rest became history.

Do Short Haul and Domestic Flight Attendants Stay Overnight?

crew bag at hotel

“Do you do like doing overnights?”

“Oh not anymore, I don’t think I’ve done one in at least a year. I can never sleep well if I’m not in my own bed and prefer to be home for the kids. Every now and then I might bid for one but mostly I try to work longer single days to get my hours up so I get more days at home”

I was definitely naïve, because when I first started as a short haul flight attendant I assumed that each time I went to work I’d be returning home the same day. As a domestic flightie, I assumed, I’d work between 2-4 short sectors and return to base at the end of a duty. How wrong I was.
